A Discrete Event Simulation (DES) tool for process plant reliability engineering


The Discrete Event Simulation (DES) software “VirtualWorld” is the heart of the RAMS Mentat GmbH concept: a technical and systems engineering approach to optimising process plant Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) subject to capital investment, operational and maintenance cost constraints.


The VirtualWorld software enables you to create a model of your production system – or parts of it – as a basis for evaluating system behaviour and performance. VirtualWorld is specifically designed to meet the requirements of industrial process plants, e.g. oil, gas, chemical, food processing, etc..

The model is built intuitively using drag-and-drop elements, without the need for programming. The software currently includes elements for modeling:

  • Equipment failure mechanisms
  • Maintenance tasks
  • Spare parts logistics
  • Process flows and tankage
  • Control elements for process operating logic
  • Supply chains for transporting process fluids

The software implements a model-in-model architecture and enables models to be exported for use in other projects.

System Requirements

The software has been tested on the following hardware specification:

  • Intel® Core™ i7 CPU
  • 16 GB installed RAM
  • 64-bit operating system

The following software packages must be installed (as prerequisites) on the target machine:

  • Windows 10
  • .NET 5.0
  • R-4.1.1 for Windows (64 bit)

Note: It is the User’s responsibility to review and – of deemed appropriate – to accept the license agreements for the prerequisite software packages prior to purchasing a VirtualWorld license. For more details, refer the installation instructions below.


VirtualWorld is a Desktop application that must be installed on the target machine. A valid license file for the target machine is required. Contact RAMS Mentat GmbH to negotiate a license agreement.


R-4.1.1 for Windows (64 bit)

R is ‘GNU S’, a freely available language and environment for statistical computing and graphics which provides a wide variety of statistical and graphical techniques: linear and nonlinear modelling, statistical tests, time series analysis, classification, clustering, etc.. Please consult the R project homepage for further information.

Download the installation file “R-4.1.1-win.exe” from the following location:

Run the installation file and install R, thereby ensuring to obey the following points:

  • Choose the “English” language packet.
  • Review and choose to accept the GNU license agreement.
  • Accept the default destination location (C:\ProgramFiles\R\R-4.1.1).
  • Install the components “Core Files” and “64-bit Files”.
  • Accept all other default installation settings.
